Below are some of the ASCP requirements outlined by ASCP for Scientist Certification in Microbiology.
Scientist in Microbiology, M(ASCP)
Identifies bacteria and microorganisms in tissue samples and body fluids to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. To be eligible for this examination category, an applicant must satisfy the minimum requirements (for degrees, the stated degree or higher) of at least one of the following routes:
ROUTE 1
- Valid MT/MLS(ASCP) certification,
- AND a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited* college/university.
ROUTE 2

Baccalaureate degree from an accredited (regionally or nationally) college/university with a major in biological science or chemistry, OR a baccalaureate degree from an accredited (regionally or nationally) college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the baccalaureate degree,

AND 1 year of full-time acceptable clinical* experience in microbiology in an acceptable laboratory within the last 5 years that must be documented on this Experience Documentation Form.
*Acceptable Clinical Laboratory:
CMS CLIA certificate of registration, compliance, accreditation;
OR DoD CLIP certificate of registration, compliance, accreditation;
OR JCI accreditation;
OR Accreditation under ISO 15189.Experience
To fulfill the experience requirements for the Scientist in Microbiology examination, you must have experience, within the last 5 years, in 3 of 6 of the following areas:
- Bacteriology
- Molecular Microbiology
- Mycobacteriology
- Mycology
- Parasitology
- Virology

ROUTE 3

Baccalaureate degree from an accredited (regionally or nationally) college/university with a major in biological science or chemistry, OR a baccalaureate degree from an accredited (regionally or nationally) college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the baccalaureate degree,

AND successful completion of a structured program in microbiology under the auspices of a NAACLS-accredited Medical Laboratory Scientist Program within the last 5 years that must be documented on this Structured Program Documentation Form.
The structured program in microbiology must be equivalent to the curriculum for microbiology in the Medical Laboratory Scientist Program.
Applicants should not apply until after successful completion of the structured program
ROUTE 4

Master’s degree from an accredited (regionally or nationally) college/university in microbiology or an appropriately related field,

AND 6 months of full-time acceptable clinical* experience in microbiology in an acceptable laboratory within the last 5 years that must be documented on this Experience Documentation Form.

AND successful completion of a program accredited by NAACLS as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Program within the last 5 years that must be documented on this Training Documentation Form.
The education received from a NAACLS-accredited Medical Laboratory Scientist program is acceptable for a period of 5 years from the date of completion of that program.
ROUTE 6:

Baccalaureate degree from an accredited (regionally or nationally) college/university with a major in biological science or chemistry, OR a baccalaureate degree from an accredited (regionally or nationally) college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the baccalaureate degree,

AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Microbiologist (MLM) program within the last five years OR successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) program within the last five years.
The education received from a NAACLS-accredited Medical Laboratory Microbiologist (MLM) or Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) program is acceptable for a period of five years from the date of completion of that program
Scientist in Microbiology – M(ASCPi)

To fulfill the experience requirements for the Scientist in Microbiology examination, you must have experience, within the last 5 years, in 3 of 6 of the following areas:

$Degrees/Diplomas in Medical Laboratory Science include Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, and Biomedical Laboratory Science.
